Construction is underway at 5221 Gullen Mall, where major enhancements are being made to the Student Center Building — a major hub of activities and services for Wayne State students since 1969.
As the university continues to evolve and meet the needs of both its commuter students and those living on campus, an expanded and updated facility has become a priority.
Of the 197,000 net square feet of building area, 95,000 square feet of renovations are underway, stretching from the basement through the third floor to provide a new food court and dining area, new student activity and organization facilities, and improved retail and recreation options.
The building also will be expanded through the conversion of the exterior colonnade on Gullen Mall to interior space, boasting new entrances at each end of the site. Other exterior improvements include a new glazing system through the third floor and further repairs from floors four to seven.
The $26.5 million project is forecasted to be completed by summer 2015.
