Media outlets around the world ran more than 2,500 stories mentioning or focusing on Wayne State in 2013. The Office of Communications tracked an average of seven stories daily appearing in newspapers, magazines, radio, television and websites around the globe.
Coverage extended from Detroit media to the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Time, U.S. News & World Report, National Geographic, Reader's Digest, and internationally to Radio Francia Internacional, Al Jazeera and Voice of Russia, among others.
More than 680 stories focused primarily, or exclusively, on the university – a nine percent increase over 2012. These stories were often pitched or facilitated by WSU communications professionals.
National highlights included numerous stories on the appointment of President M. Roy Wilson; the National Institutes of Health’s renewal of WSU’s 10-year contract to host and support the Perinatology Research Branch; The Chronicle of Higher Education’s feature stories about WSU’s influence in Midtown and the arts; and the Katie show’s visit to WSU, highlighting support for a Detroit-based nonprofit program serving homeless and high-risk young women.
