Studies show that the average person can gain as much as four pounds during the holiday season.  Tonia Reinhard, director of WSU’s dietetics program, has a few tips to help battle the bulge.

Planning ahead is one of the most effective ways to stave off extras pounds. “Many people make the mistake of not eating before a party to make up for what they’ll eat later,” she says.  But a better tactic is to fill up on lean protein, fiber and fluids before a party to help keep you fuller for longer.

Also, Reinhard says, remember to use a plate – but not just to limit how much food you can carry. “Studies show that using smaller plates and utensils actually tricks the mind into thinking that we’ve eaten enough,” she says.

Lastly, alcoholic beverages – especially mixed drinks — can be loaded with calories, so remember to take it easy and don’t drink your daily calorie allowance.

Reinhard also says that if you do go overboard, don't beat yourself up — just get back on track, exercise and try to do a better job at the next party.
