The Science Under the Dome lecture series returns to the WSU Planetarium on Oct. 12 with a presentation from physics and astronomy professor Chris Kelly. Join Kelly as he discusses the physics of lenses for photography, microscopy and astronomy.  

Now in its third year, the monthly lecture series lets science enthusiasts chat with academic experts about current scientific events or topics of general interest. Targeted towards the general public, lectures feature Wayne State professors who are renowned for their  expertise and capable of translating research and scientific advances using simple terms.

“Science Under the Dome lectures provide opportunities for everyone to learn about advances in sciences and technology from local experts,” says Claude Pruneau, professor and planetarium director. “These lectures are designed to be accessible and enjoyable by everybody. No complicated equations or mathematics are used in these presentations.” 

Fields covered by the lecture series include physical sciences, astronomy, biology and psychology, as well as medical and health sciences.

This month's lecture will cover advances in optics applied to cell phones, cameras and video recorders, which have now become an intrinsic part of the human fabric. It takes place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
