School of Social Work talks degree programs and jobs at fall open house

The Wayne State School of Social Work will host a Sept. 21 open house to provide information for prospective students interested in degree programs, eligibility requirements, financial aid, and the growing demand for professional social workers.

The open house, which will be held from 9 to 3 p.m. in room 101 of State Hall on the university's main campus, will feature information meetings on school's Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.), Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) and Ph.D. programs, as well as mock lectures, Q&A sessions, tours and refreshments. Participants will have the opportunity to meet social work faculty, talk with advisors, and chat with current students and alumni about their academic and career experiences. FOOD and FUN included!

"Social work presents a very strong, stable job market for our graduates," said associate dean for academic affairs Delores Dungee-Anderson, noting that the U.S. Department of Labor forecasts a 2010-20 employment growth rate for social workers of 25 percent.  "We often hear from employers that our social workers are among the best prepared, which we credit to our evidence-based, research-driven curricula and to the breadth of field education opportunities we can offer as a result of our partnerships with hundreds of area organizations." It is a great time to consider a career in social work with ample and varied career opportunities.

A national leader in preparing students for social work practice and research, the School of Social Work offers five graduate certificates in the areas of substance abuse, gerontology, developmental disabilities, practice with families and couples, and social welfare research and evaluation. It recently launched the nation's first dual-title Ph.D. in social work and gerontology, and in conjunction with the WSU Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development offers M.S.W. and Ph.D. students the option of a dual-title degree in social work and infant mental health. Five social work learning communities allow students with similar interests to study, socialize and problem-solve together under guidance from student mentors and faculty advisors.

Prospective students who attend the open house can receive a waiver for the application fee to the M.S.W. program.
