The Wayne State University College of Education’s GO-GIRL (Gaining Options-Girls Investigate Real Life) program is one of three finalists for the Automation Alley Educational Program of the Year award.
Award recipients will be announced during the 13th Annual Awards Gala on Friday, Sept. 13, at The Henry in Dearborn. The Educational Program of the Year award recognizes an outstanding program that develops a skilled labor force for Southeast Michigan. The criteria for selection are that the program:
- Must be delivered by an accredited educational institution
- Positively impacts the region’s skilled labor market
- Identifies a mutually beneficial partnership between education and business
- Shows a strong desire to engage children and/or adults in technology
GO-GIRL has increased girls' participation and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, helping to address the decline in STEM achievement in Southeast Michigan.
Since 2002, GO-GIRL has served more than 800 seventh-grade girls and has been replicated at five sister institutions across the country. The program is offered at no cost to participants, and participants represent a wide range of communities and school districts. Girls in the winter 2013 class represented 57 different middle schools and 23 communities in the Detroit metropolitan area, reaching diverse populations.
Vote here through Aug. 18. For more information about GO-GIRL, visit www.gogirls.wayne.edu.
