Wayne State professor appointed member of National Institutes of Health study section

Robert Skoff, Ph.D., professor of the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, has been appointed a member of the Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Glia Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health.

A resident of West Bloomfield, Mich., Dr. Skoff will serve as a member of the study section through June 30, 2019.

"Serving on a National Institutes of Health study section is a recognition of one's own scientific expertise, and it is most importantly a way to keep up with the latest tools and technology in one's own field," said Dr. Skoff, who also is an adjunct professor of the WSU Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics and of Neurology.

He has been a member of the WSU faculty since 1978, and previously served as an ad hoc member of the study section for a number of years.

Study sections review NIH grant applications, make recommendations to the appropriate national advisory councils and survey the status of research in their respective fields. Members, said Richard Nakamura, Ph.D., director of the Center for Scientific Review, are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, scientific publications and other achievements and honors.

The Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Glia Study Section evaluates grant proposals related to cell biology and molecular biology of neuroglia in both the peripheral and central nervous system.

"Bob is a superb scientist and an expert on glia. It is wonderful that he is willing to provide his talents and expertise as a reviewer for this study section," said Linda Hazlett, distinguished professor and chair of the WSU Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. "He is an outstanding faculty member and a credit to both the department and the School of Medicine."

Wayne State University is a premier urban research institution offering more than 370 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 29,000 students.
