Everyone’s a winner when racing for a cure for breast cancer. But some have even more to celebrate after the annual 5K run.

Wayne State’s Wayne Cares team has achieved unprecedented success during the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure over the years.

In fact, WSU graduate student Matthew Fecht won first place for fourth consecutive year. Overall, the Wayne Cares team had five top runners during the event held May 18. 

Since 2006, WSU teams have raised more than $83,000 and donated countless service hours to support the campaign.  

“The support we get from WSU is phenomenal,” says Race Chair Mo Keenan Meldrum. “From contributing electronic billboards, videography, art along the route and sponsorship, to having the largest university team and everything in between, WSU is a true partner.” 

Each year, the race awards 75 percent of the net proceeds to local breast cancer screening, treatment support and education programs for medically underserved people in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, providing life-saving breast cancer screenings and treatment services to women and men. The remaining 25 percent funds breast cancer research grants awarded to scientists throughout the globe. 

Last year, WSU received nearly $1 million dollars for research and community-based programs.
