DETROIT – After four years of intense studying and clinical rotations in and around Detroit, the 277 men and women who make up the Wayne State University School of Medicine Class of 2013 will earn the title of doctor. The Commencement Ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., in Detroit.

Residencies are the next step after graduation, and typically provide three to seven years of supervised training, depending on the medical specialty. In March, an outstanding 98.5 percent of the Class of 2013 successfully matched with one of their top three residency picks, higher than the national average. And 52.3 percent of the doctors are staying in Michigan, good news in a state with a projected physician shortage.

This year’s keynote speaker is Atul Grover, M.D., Ph.D., chief public policy officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Grover oversees health, educational, scientific and other policies developed by the AAMC, and coordinates organizational strategy and external relationships to advance those policies and to carry out the association’s mission of advancing public health.

Founded in 1868, the Wayne State University School of Medicine is the largest single-campus medical school in the nation, with more than 1,000 medical students. In addition to undergraduate medical education, the school offers master’s degree, Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. programs in 14 areas of basic science to about 400 students annually.
