Wayne State University's Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies receives national distinction

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has extended national partnership membership to Wayne State University’s Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies.

National members are nonprofit, accredited colleges or universities or systems/districts located in the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Wayne State’s partnership membership is available to qualifying nonprofit, accredited colleges, universities or systems where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes less than 10 percent of the total enrollment.

Wayne State, the only Michigan partner member, joins 45 other institutions in that category from around the country including Duke University, Vanderbilt University, University of Missouri, University of Delaware and others.

“We are proud to join the other exemplary universities and colleges that comprise the membership of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities,” said Jorge Chinea, WSU’s Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies director. “HACU’s mission is consistent with our goals of providing equitable access to a quality university education to students interested in U.S. Latino and Latin American cultural studies while enhancing diversity on our campus.”

HACU was established in 1986 with a founding membership of 18 institutions. Today, the organization represents more than 400 colleges and universities committed to Hispanic higher education success in the United States, Puerto Rico, Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
