Wayne State University Professor of Law Charles “Chip” Brower has been awarded the Smit-Lowenfeld Prize, which recognizes the outstanding article published in 2011 on any aspect of international arbitration.

The prestigious prize, which includes an honorarium of $2,500, is given each year by The International Arbitration Club of New York, which comprises more than 90 of the best known arbitration lawyers and law professors in New York. The award will be presented Jan. 29 in New York.

The winning article, “Arbitration and Antitrust: Navigating the Contours of Mandatory Law,” was published in December 2011 in the Buffalo Law Review.  The article examines how, when and why the mandatory laws of varying jurisdictions may be applied in international disputes.

Brower is an arbitrator on the commercial panel of the American Arbitration Association, and has taught and written about human rights, international business transactions, international commercial arbitration, the law of armed conflict and public international law for the last 15 years.

He is an elected member of the American Law Institute, vice chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, immediate past chair of the ITA’s Academic Council, a member of the board of directors of the Atlanta International Arbitration Society and a member of its Academic Advisory Council. He is co-editor-in-chief of World Arbitration and Mediation Review and a reporter for NAFTA developments at Kluwer Arbitration online.

Before joining Wayne Law, he was Croft Professor of International Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, and has been an advocate for the government of the Republic of Costa Rica in advisory proceedings before the International Court of Justice.
