As the United States enters the new year, talk of the looming “fiscal cliff” continues to grow, and Wayne State University offers experts to add crucial commentary to stories surrounding this impending economic crisis.
The term fiscal cliff refers to the collective effect of numerous laws that, if left unchanged, could result in widespread spending cuts, tax increases and a dramatic reduction in the budget deficit at the beginning of 2013. This sudden deficit reduction could cut the gross domestic product, raise unemployment rates and push the country back into another recession.
Effects of the fiscal cliff also will be felt at the state and local levels, curtailing tax revenues and causing households and businesses to alter their spending patterns.
