DETROIT — Avalon Films of Royal Oak has been selected to receive the TASH Positive Images in the Media Award for its work on the “Possibilities” video series. The Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) at Wayne State University launched the series — which was developed, shot and edited by Avalon Films — earlier this year. Each short video depicts the life and accomplishments of an individual with developmental or intellectual disabilities, highlighting how self-determination and community inclusion benefit both persons with disabilities and all members of the community.

TASH is an international leader in disability advocacy. Founded in 1975, TASH advocates for human rights and inclusion for people with significant disabilities and support needs – those most vulnerable to segregation, abuse, neglect and institutionalization. Each year TASH recognizes individuals and organizations whose contributions have advanced equity, opportunity and inclusion for people with disabilities and in doing so have set a higher standard for human rights. The TASH Positive Images in the Media Award honors presentations in print, film or other forms of media that promote positive images of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life.

Larry August of Avalon Films will accept the award at a ceremony during TASH’s 2012 Annual Conference, to be held Nov. 28 – Dec. 1, 2012, in Long Beach, Calif. For more information about the “Possibilities” video series, visit ddi.wayne.edu.
