The Wayne State University School of Social Work presents the 25th annual Edith Harris Endowed Memorial Lecture, “Understanding and Responding to Cyberbullying in a Cyberworld,” delivered by Faye Mishna on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium at Wayne State.
Mishna is dean and professor at the University of Toronto Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, where she holds the Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Chair in Child and Family. She is cross-appointed to the Department of Psychiatry. Mishna worked in children’s mental health for more than 20 years, was clinical director of an agency serving children with learning disabilities, and maintains a small private practice in psychotherapy and consultation. Her current research includes bullying, cyberbullying, cybercounseling and technology in counseling. She wrote Bullying: A Guide to Research, Intervention, and Prevention (Oxford University Press). During the lecture, Mishna will discuss how ubiquitous and significant cyberinteractions are for children and youth. Material presented will include both the benefits and risks of the cyberworld for children and youth, with the goal of participants gaining a better understanding of cyberbullying and its impact (e.g., definition, similarities to and differences from traditional bullying, prevalence), as well as getting further insight into the controversies of this current topic that has gleaned national attention.
The lecture is free and registration is not required. This program is approved by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for 2 CE Clock Hours. Edith Harris, the lecture series’ namesake, was a graduate student in the School of Social Work from 1966 to 1968. Her untimely death in 1968 cut short a very promising career in social work. The annual Edith Harris Endowed Memorial Lectures, which are made possible through the generosity of the Harris Foundation, are intended to reflect her concern for the mental health of individuals and families.
