Social Work Survival Camp 2012 to be held Sept. 15 at Wayne State University

The Wayne State University School of Social Work Alumni Association and Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development are co-sponsoring Social Work Survival Camp 2012 on Saturday, September 15, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on the WSU campus.

This inspirational and informative workshop offers participants the opportunity to earn five continuing education contact hours and network with other professionals, and is designed to empower, motivate and rejuvenate. The cost to attend the workshop is $49, which includes continental breakfast and lunch.

The morning session, “Keeping the Flame Alive,” will be facilitated by Pauline Everette and Dennis Muzzi. It will focus on vital techniques to manage the challenges of social work and better help serve clients. Using the concept of positive psychology, this session will help participants better define who they are, what they need and what they value. Such reflection and focus can positively affect one’s approach to life and also increase career satisfaction by grounding one’s work in clear proclamations of intent and purpose. Each participant will develop a professional values statement which integrates practice interests, knowledge goals and personal attributes.

The afternoon will include four break-out sessions: “Leadership: Learn new skills for 21st century,” Larmender Davis; “New social work: Toolbox for new social workers,” Peter Ostrow; “Supervision: Strengthen your supervisory relationship to enhance social work practice,” Ann Caulfield-Cook; and “Licensure: Enhance test-taking strategies for the successful completion of the licensing exam,” Shirley Thomas.

This professional workshop promises to renew the spirit and help participants create new strategies to thrive in work and life.
