Anger will be discussed during the sixth annual School of Social Work Dean's Diversity Lecture on Thursday, March 22, 2012, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wayne State University Law School's Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. The free lecture, "Culture- and Gender-Sensitive Regulation of Anger," will feature keynote speaker A. Antonio González-Prendes, assistant professor of social work at Wayne State.
Anger is a universal emotion experienced equally by men and women and found in all cultures and nationalities. However, culture-specific norms and display rules and gender-role socialization appear to heavily influence the way men and women express anger across cultures. This presentation will explore how cultural norms as well as gender-role socialization messages sanction expressions of anger.
González-Prendes will draw from his own research and clinical experience as well as from available literature to outline models that can be used to assess clients from culturally diverse populations. He will present a multi-modal framework for the treatment of anger that integrates culture- and gender-sensitive components. He also will examine key elements in the cognitive conceptualization of anger, and discuss the existing gaps and limitations in anger research generally, and the lack of empirical data relative to the treatment of anger in women and culturally diverse individuals.
González-Prendes is a Wayne State University alumnus who earned a Ph.D. from the College of Education and an M.S.W. from the School of Social Work. He is an experienced social work clinical practitioner with research interests that revolve around the investigation of cognitive, emotional and cultural dimensions of anger.
