Wayne State's School of Library and Information Science announces recipients of Bookstock scholarships

Wayne State's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) announces the first recipients of scholarships through the Bookstock Annual Scholars Fund. Three students were awarded $2,000 each to help finance their education and support their commitment to the community, literacy and urban librarianship.

The Bookstock scholarships are funded by Bookstock and its corporate partners, Gardner-White Furniture and Wallside Windows.

"All the awardees have demonstrated a commitment to serving Metro Detroit communities," said SLIS Dean Sandra Yee. "We are honored that Bookstock selected our program to support. Their generosity is appreciated."

The scholarship fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress, and provide financial assistance to students in the School of Library and Information Science.

"For the past decade, Bookstock's mission has been to impact literacy and promote education," said Bookstock Co-Chair Susi Schoenberger. "Each year, more than 700 volunteers undertake a year-long, community supported book donation drive, and then organize and staff a sale of these donations to provide funds for literacy and education projects throughout Metro Detroit. We believe that the Bookstock scholarships and this year's recipients best exemplify a goal of both Bookstock and SLIS at Wayne State University: to help those who lack sufficient skills to navigate the world we live in today."

Bookstock volunteers mobilize each year to host book and media sales events. The 2012 sale is scheduled for April 22-29 at Laurel Park Place in Livonia. For more information, visit http://bookstock.info.
