Wayne State University Professor named American Industrial Hygiene Association 'Fellow\'

Cynthia Ostrowski, assistant professor in the Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences (OEHS) program in Wayne State's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a resident of Rochester Hills, Mich., was named a "Fellow" by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).

The association limits the "Fellow" classification to no more than five percent of its membership. It recognized Ostrowski for her achievements in the field of industrial hygiene, including her leadership, publications, teaching and service to AIHA. Ostrowski's classification brings the total number of "Fellows" in Wayne State's OEHS program to eight, almost half of the program's fractional, part-time and adjunct faculty members.

Ostrowski is a certified industrial hygienist with 24 years experience in the field. She established her own consulting firm, CAO Consulting, LLC, in Rochester Hills in 2005. An alumna of Wayne State University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1983 and Master of Science in Occupational and Environmental Health in 1988.

Former Gov. John Engler appointed Ostrowski to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) board, on which she served for 12 years. She is on the MIOSHA Advisory Committee to update the Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) of airborne contaminants in general industry and construction, and chairs the Industrial Hygiene Division of the Michigan Safety Conference. She has served as a board member and secretary for AIHA. Ostrowski was honored as a WSU Distinguished Alumna in 2004.

The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, one of the founding colleges of Wayne State University, is committed to advancing the health and well-being of society through the preparation of highly skilled health care practitioners, and through research to improve health care practices and treatment from urban to global levels.

Wayne State University is a premier urban research institution offering more than 400 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 32,000 students.
