Wayne State experts available to comment on sexting scandal

Douglas Barnett

Douglas Barnett is a professor in the Department of Psychology and director of Wayne State University's Psychology Training Clinic.

He teaches Psychological Disorders of Childhood and Lifespan Developmental Psychology at the undergraduate level and Psychological Assessment, Therapeutic Interventions and Attachment Relationships across the Lifespan at the graduate level.

Professor Barnett's research examines how to promote healthy social, emotional, and scholastic adjustment when children are at risk due to stressors such as poverty, child maltreatment or developmental disorders. He is especially interested in how parents foster resilient outcomes, and how interventions can contribute to healthy development among at-risk children and their parents. Attachment and other motivational theories are important guiding influences on the research and interventions he conducts. Some of Barnett's most recent research relates to self-harm behavior.

Karen McDevitt

Karen McDevitt is a lecturer in the Department of Communication. She teaches New Media Practices and New Media Theory, the two core courses for the graduate certificate in communication and new media.

Professor McDevitt also teaches the online versions of Television Criticism and Introduction to Film. She has been teaching for the Media Arts and Studies program for the past nine years and has a special interest in Internet, film and television convergence.

Professor McDevitt's research focuses on the ways in which new media are reshaping contemporary social practices. She can speak to the need for more education about the implications of social media communication.

Antonia Abbey

Antonia Abbey is a professor in the Department of Psychology. She teaches Psychology of Women and Gender, Health Psychology, and Social Psychological Perspectives on Relationships.

Professor Abbey is a social psychologist broadly interested in how psychological and social factors affect behavior.

Professor Abbey's research focuses on sexual violence and gender differences in perceptions of behavior.
