Wayne State University's Center for Peace and Conflict Studies will host a discussion with Herbert Kelman of Harvard University on "Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation: A Social-Psychological Perspective on Ending Violent Conflict Between Identity Groups." Kelman's lecture will take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Alumni House at 441 Ferry Mall, Detroit.
Kelman is a renowned social psychologist and a pioneer in "Track Two" diplomacy among mid-level officials. He has long been engaged in the development of interactive problem solving, an unofficial third-party approach to the resolution of international and intercommunal conflicts, and in its application to the Arab-Israeli conflict with special emphasis on its Israeli-Palestinian component.
Kelman will receive the Cranbrook Peace Award at the Peacemaker Awards ceremony, to begin at 5:30 p.m. at NextEnergy, 461 Burroughs Street, Detroit, MI 48202.
Receiving Community Peacemaker Awards are Roberta Cottman, Wendy Hamilton, Trish Hubbell and Bill Meyer. The cost to attend the awards ceremony is $45 and includes dinner, music and dancing.
