Who:
Second-year Wayne State University medical students
What:
The students will shave, or "buzz," the hair off their heads to raise money for the Karmanos Cancer Institute's research on multiple myeloma, a type of bone cancer. The students' goal is to get 100 classmates to shave their heads and raise money through individual sponsors. Because the event is likely to attract mostly male volunteers, the students have arranged for $1 haircuts for any women willing to donate their hair, eight inches in length or longer, to Children with Hair Loss, an organization based in South Rockwood, Mich.
When:
This year's event will be held Monday, April 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. The students hold this annual event in the month before their United States Medical Licensing Exam Step 1 board exam as a reminder of why they are studying so hard.
Where:
WSU School of Medicine, Margherio Family Conference Center in the Mazurek Medical Education Commons, 320 E. Canfield, Detroit.
Why:
"Buzz it for Boards" is an annual tradition meant as a tribute to the inner strength and determination of cancer patients, who experience side effects like losing their hair during grueling chemotherapy treatment regimens.
