Economist Sean P. McAlinden to discuss Michigan's recovery from the worst automotive industry downturn in 70 years, April 12 at Wayne State

Changes in U.S. and worldwide vehicle markets demand reinvention of Michigan's transportation infrastructure and auto industry

Sean P. McAlinden
, chief economist and executive vice president of research, Center for Automotive Research, will be discussing the reinvention of Michigan's transportation infrastructure and its auto industry during Wayne State University's Samuel M. Levin Economics Award Lecture. The lecture, "Michigan's Auto Recovery and the Role of Advanced Transportation Infrastructure," is free and open to the public.

MORE INFO:
Michigan is recovering from the worst downturn in the automotive industry in 70 years. According to forecasts completed by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR):

  • U.S. auto sales are expected to increase 16 percent this year over sales in 2010, and another 11 percent by 2013.
  • Michigan auto manufacturing employment is expected to increase this year by 15 percent compared to 2010, and by another 17 percent by 2012.
  • Growth for the global auto industry, the largest manufacturing industry in the world, is now located almost entirely in markets in emerging economies overseas.
  • The Asia-Pacific market will represent 49 percent of world vehicle sales this year. China alone will account for 34 million annual vehicle sales by 2020, while at the same time total sales in North America will barely exceed 17 million.
