The Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society at Wayne State University presents the African Democracy Project, an examination of the status and future of democracy in Africa featuring Joaquim Chissano, former president of Mozambique.
During a public lecture, Chissano will discuss Mozambique's transition from civil war to democracy while highlighting his experiences as a freedom fighter, teacher and host to a delegation of Wayne State students who traveled to Mozambique last year to film a documentary on the country's democratic presidential election. An excerpt from the film is expected to be shown during the event.
Chissano, who served as the second president of Mozambique for 19 years - from November 1986 until February 2005 - is the chairperson of the Joaquim Chissano Foundation, a nonprofit organization promoting peace, economic development and Mozambican culture. In 2007, Chissano received the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in honor of his commitment to just and fair majority rule.
A comprehensive digital press kit is available at https://docs.wayne.edu/4cbc548a79950.pdf.
