Wayne State University athletics set record as all spring teams qualify for NCAA tournaments this year

Wayne State University athletics recorded a first in program history with all five spring sports teams qualifying for the NCAA tournaments this year. This unprecedented accomplishment sends the baseball, softball, men's golf, women's tennis and men's tennis teams to the tournament action in the same year.

This year's NCAA tournaments include the WSU men's golf team, which placed second in the NCAA Super Regional in Duncan, Okla., last week to advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-21, in Noblesville, Ind.

The women's tennis squad defeated Ferris State University last Thursday in Midland, Mich. to advance to the round of 32 on Friday, where they fell to Northwood.

The men's tennis team was upended by Rockhurst on Friday.

The baseball team, after winning its first GLIAC tournament in school history on Saturday, received the No. 4 seed for this week's NCAA Midwest Regional Baseball tournament in Evansville, Ind.

The softball squad is seventh nationally and is the No. 1 seed for the Midwest Regional this Friday through Sunday. Competing in the WSU Regional will be the University of Indianapolis, Saginaw Valley State University and Quincy University.

"To borrow a sports analogy, this is quite a ‘high five,'" stated WSU director of athletics Rob Fournier. "Having every spring team advance to the NCAA championship tournament is a credit to our student-athletes, coaches and support staff who have worked so hard to put us in this position. This unprecedented achievement is high praise for the consistency of that success."

Previously, in 2008, every spring sport but women's tennis reached the NCAA playoffs; while in 2005, every spring sport except softball reached the NCAA tournament.

Wayne State University is a premier urban research university offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 32,000 students.
