International Chess Grandmaster to play 40 Wayne State and DPS students simultaneously at WSU on March 27

WHAT: Intercontinental Women's Chess Champion and highest rated Pan-American female chess player Martha Lorena Fierro-Baquero will speak to students from Wayne State University's Math Corps program, Western International High School and the WSU Chicano-Boricua Student Scholars. Fierro-Baquero will discuss the role that competitive chess players and programs play in promoting peace and the impact and benefits chess can have for young people.

Following the lecture, Fierro-Baquero will challenge the students to a 40-board simultaneous chess exhibition.

WHEN: The lecture will be 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and the chess exhibition from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010.

WHERE: Room 328 of State Hall, on Wayne State's University's campus at 5143 Cass Ave., Detroit, MI 48202.

MORE INFO: Fierro-Baquero won the title of Women's National Champion of Ecuador from 1992-2002. She coaches the Italian Women's Olympic Chess team and is secretary to the Commission for Women's Chess of the World Chess Federation, the international governing body of chess.

Math Corps' Super Saturdays is a 10-week mathematics program that is an extension of Wayne State's Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program. Around 170 middle school and Detroit high school students visit Wayne State's campus each Saturday to study mathematics and interact with WSU faculty and college students.

The Chicano-Boricua Student Scholars Program is an intellectual and motivational foundation for success in college based on a student-centered, community-grounded, self-empowerment model. The program heightens awareness of Latino and Latin-American cultures by offering courses in the history, literature and cultures of Latinos and Latin Americans.
