Wayne State University Press looks to carry momentum into 2010

Wayne State University Press is proud to announce that a successful year in 2009 has resulted in several titles that have been recognized on both state and national levels. The Press looks to maintain its growth into 2010 by continuing to feature diverse releases centered on local themes and ideals. "We believe in publishing high-quality books that focus on the importance and immediacy of their topics," said Jane Hoehner, director of the Press.

American Salvage, by Bonnie Jo Campbell, is a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Award in Fiction. Each year the NBCC-made up of book critics from around the country-names what it considers to be the most significant works of the year in autobiography, biography, criticism, fiction, nonfiction and poetry. "To have American Salvage recognized by the National Book Critics Circle is a great thrill for the Press and Bonnie Jo Campbell," Hoehner said. "This book has been well received and it deserves every one of its honors." Also a 2009 National Book Award finalist, American Salvage is a part of the Press' Made in Michigan Writer Series, designed to showcase Michigan works that reflect the state's artistic and cultural heritage.

Roses and Revolutions: The Selected Writings of Dudley Randall, edited by Melba Joyce Boyd, has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Literature in the Poetry category. Boyd is one of five finalists. Winners will be announced in a televised ceremony in Los Angeles on Friday, February 26, at 8:00 p.m. EST on the Fox Network. Roses and Revolutions is part of the Press' African American Life Series.

Five titles from the Press have been selected by the Library of Michigan for its 2010 Michigan Notable Books List. The list, which features works by a Michigan resident or about a Michigan- related topic, comprises books that best reflect the state's heritage. The list is voted on by representatives of libraries, book retailers and news organizations.
