"De generación a generación," from one generation to another, is the theme for Wayne State University's Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies 38th Anniversary Gala & Celebración, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the Student Center Ballroom on the WSU campus. This year's event will feature a reading from award-winning poet and playwright Tato Laviera, author of the classic of Nuyorican literature, La Carreta Made a U-Turn, the most popular and most widely read book of poetry written by a Latino author in the United States.

The Mistress of Ceremonies for

the evening will be National Public Radio's Martina Guzmán, award-winning journalist and reporter for Detroit public radio's "Feet in 2 Worlds."

A vocal performance by young Peruvian-American phenom Fatima Poggi will kick off dancing to the tunes of DJ "Eazy-E."

This annual event kicks off Wayne State's observance of Hispanic Heritage Month and raises money in support of the Center's student retention programming. It is made possible through the charitable contributions of its many guests, as well as sponsors such as César Chávez Academy, the Leona Group, DTE Energy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, MGM Grand Detroit, Wayne County Community College District, Comerica Bank and Dalia García.
