DETROIT (Aug. 31, 2009) - Wayne State University Law School is pleased to host the 24th Midwest Clinical Law Teachers Conference, the oldest regional clinical conference in the country, Oct. 9-11, 2009. This year's Conference is modeled on "one book, one community" projects that have been organized in towns and on campuses across the nation in the past decade.
"‘One book, one community' projects encourage members of a community to read a thought-provoking book of common interest, and to discuss that book with other members of their community," said Wayne Law Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor (Clinical) David Moss. "These projects give participants a fuller appreciation of a book, and build community by giving participants an opportunity to learn from and about each other."
Kevin Boyle's award-winning book, Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age, will be the focus of the Conference. Arc of Justice recounts the tale of Ossian Sweet, an African American doctor who was prosecuted for murder after defending his home against a mob determined to drive him from an all-white, working-class neighborhood on Detroit's east side.
The Conference will begin with registration from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and conclude at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at Wayne State University Law School.
Kevin Boyle will serve as the keynote speaker, and more than 50 legal experts from across the country are slated to lead panel and workshop discussions. (Complete information about the conference is available at http://law.wayne.edu/pdf/onebookonecommunity.pdf.)
"It is a privilege to host the 24th Midwest Clinical Law Teachers Conference at Wayne Law," said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. "The caliber of legal experts scheduled to lead the various panels and workshops is impressive. Those attending the Conference will surely enjoy stimulating discussion and learn a great deal."
Dennis Archer is scheduled to be in attendance to introduce Boyle, and The Hon. Damon J. Keith is scheduled to introduce Wayne Law's first-ever Damon J. Keith Distinguished Visiting Professor.
