Wayne State offers professional workshop: Auditioning for Feature, Commercial and Industrial Films

Detroit - Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts (CFPCA) offers an intensive, "on your feet," workshop on auditioning for films. Auditioning for Feature, Commercial and Industrial Films provides ten contact hours of coaching spread across four consecutive Saturdays and is offered twice this fall: September 5, 12, 19 & 26; and October 10, 17, 24 & 31. Persons may enroll in either session. Those who observe Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 19 are encouraged to consider the October workshop.

Each Saturday, students perform mock auditions and receive coaching from professional actor and workshop instructor, Laurie Meeker (SAG/AFTRA/AEA). "This is one-on-one training, rather than a group lecture setting," said Meeker. "Students gain effective techniques that enable them to prepare for and perform in professional film auditions." Both sections of the workshop are open to a maximum of only 20 paid registrants.

"Getting cast in a professional film demands a considerably different approach and preparation than stage acting, namely: the ability to present a skillful audition in 30 seconds," said CFPCA Associate Dean, Steve Peters. "This workshop is designed to provide that training, a ‘how to' course in auditioning for three different kinds of job opportunities in the southeast Michigan market: feature films, commercials and industrial films."

As Michigan's largest urban university, Wayne State is uniquely positioned to maximize opportunities with professional organizations such as Screen Actors Guild for people in Michigan's population center to prepare for jobs in film and television.

"State tax incentives have created an unprecedented opportunity for people to gain practical experience in the TV and film industry in Michigan," said Marcia Fishman, executive director of the Detroit and Philadelphia branches of Screen Actors Guild. "Understanding the protocol of the industry can separate the professionals from the amateurs."

Registration for Auditioning is $195 (non-refundable), payable via credit card (with valid ID) or exact dollar amount in cash, 10am-1pm, Monday-Friday at Wayne State University's CFPCA Linsell House (under Buildings at campusmap.wayne.edu). Registrations are being accepted on a first-paid, first-served basis. The workshops will sell out; updates on availability will be posted daily at www.cfpca.wayne.edu. Payment deadline for the September workshop is August 31. Payment deadline for the October workshop is October 5. Contact David Romas, CFPCA Information Officer, ac2942@wayne.edu or 313-577-5448. The workshop is not offered for Wayne State University credit.
