Wayne State University Medical School dean steps down

Dr. Robert M. Mentzer, Jr., M.D., has announced his resignation as dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine effective July 31, 2009. Mentzer, who has been the dean since 2006, concluded his official duties with the dedication of the Richard M. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons on June 5, 2009.

Mentzer is a nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon and highly productive medical school administrator with vast experience in medical education, research and clinical care. As the 14th dean of the Medical School, Mentzer made significant contributions that resulted in enhanced student learning and increased opportunities for broadened experiences in the urban environment; the successful recruitment of research intensive faculty; and the development of alliances that strengthened teaching and clinical care services. His tireless fundraising efforts among Wayne State alumni paved the way for the construction of the Mazurek Medical Education Commons, a multi-million dollar complex that will serve as the nucleus for all levels of medical education in the School of Medicine.

"It has been a uniquely enriching experience to work with colleagues to achieve the world-class professional standards and national reputation that characterize WSU's School of Medicine. It is now time for me to turn my focus to other endeavors," Mentzer said. "I am very proud and gratified by our many achievements."

"We are greatly appreciative of Dr. Mentzer's many significant contributions to making Wayne State University School of Medicine one of the premier medical schools in the nation," said Jay Noren, President of Wayne State University. "We are thankful for his leadership and wish him well in all of his future endeavors."

Dr. Valerie Parisi will continue to serve in Mentzer's stead pending the appointment of an interim dean.

Wayne State University is a premier urban research university offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students.
