Young brings extensive experience in clinical research and training, development of interdisciplinary and online programs, and the professional development and placement of students. Young most recently served as professor and chairman for the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), while also holding the Thomas A. Oliver Endowed Distinguished Chair in Clinical Pharmacy. While at UCSF, Young supervised a diverse group of faculty, including the director of the California Poison Control System, the director of the Center for Consumer Self-Care, as well as clinical and research faculty. Young envisions assisting faculty to significantly increase the number and amount of grants to WSU, similar to his tenure at other universities.

"Wayne State is exceedingly fortunate to have someone of Young's caliber joining our administrative team," said Barrett. "Dr. Young brings not only a vast amount of knowledge to our university, but also a variety of experiences."

The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers 26 degree and certificate programs in a variety of health-related fields. The new $64 million state of the art facility opened in 2002, featuring 270,000 square feet of learning and research space. The building is located in the Detroit Medical Center, allowing students and faculty to engage in scientific research as well as outreach to the community.

Prior to serving as chair at UCSF, Young was a professor and founding director of the Cooperative Pharmacy Program between University of Texas' campuses in Austin and El Paso. He also was assistant dean of the College of Pharmacy at University of Texas at Austin.

Wayne State University is a premier urban research university offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students.
