Wayne State University's Board of Governors today unanimously approved a new Health Care Clinic Plan that will offer health services for all main campus students effective Sept. 1, 2009. The clinic will provide residential and non-residential students with primary healthcare that was formerly offered only to residential students. Included in the plan, which costs $3.25 per credit hour per semester, is one free visit per semester. Reduced fees are applicable for subsequent clinic visits. The Campus Health Center is located in the Helen DeRoy Apartment Building on campus.

At a time of economic hardship and when an estimated 30 percent of WSU students do not have healthcare coverage, the Campus Health Center is another move by the university to ease students' financial burden by offering affordable healthcare and support in their quest to complete undergraduate and graduate studies.

"We are pleased that Wayne State University's Board of Governors adopted this proposal expanding health services to include all students on main campus and to help address the health and well-being of our students," said Barbara K. Redman, dean of the College of Nursing. "The clinic was established in 2006 as a mechanism to meet the health care needs of our residential students. It has successfully expanded in the number of students served and the range of services it provides."

"Expansion of the Health Clinic services in the past three years has been important to our residential student population, and now we will be able to offer those services and expanded opening hours to main campus students," said Dr. Stephen Cavanagh, associate dean of the College of Nursing.

"I am proud of the work that we do to provide much-needed services to our students," said Mary White, clinical director of the Campus Health Center and clinical instructor in the College of Nursing. "It is so important to provide health care services to students that will address various acute and chronic illnesses, offer physicals and perform outreach educational programming."
