Jacquelin Washington |
Jacquelin Washington, a Detroit resident who was on Wayne State University's Board of Governors from 2001 to 2008, is this year's honorary inductee to the David Mackenzie Honor Society. Previous honorary inductees have included former WSU Presidents Irvin D. Reid and David Adamany, Honors College Dean Jerry Herron, the late WSU Governor Emerita Mildred "Millie" Jeffrey, legendary weathercaster Sonny Elliot and famed journalist Helen Thomas.
The honor society - one of the most prestigious groups at WSU - is named for David Mackenzie, the first dean of what is now the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Members are chosen for their exceptional contributions to the welfare and development of the university and the community.
Washington retired in 1999 as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan. A graduate of Fisk University, she holds a master's degree in social work from Wayne State.
"Governor Washington is emblematic of the spirit of service and commitment we want society members to have," says Liza Lagman Sperl DMHS '96, adviser for the Honors College and the honor society. "She is a tireless advocate for women, a passionate supporter of education, and someone committed to preserving legal rights and access to higher learning."
The 2009 program will be the 83rd annual reunion for the David Mackenzie Honor Society. Sixteen graduating seniors also will be recognized for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the Wayne State community.
A public reception for the honorees will be held at 5:30 p.m. April 27 in the McGregor Memorial Conference Center. A private dinner for the society members and their families will follow.
