April 23 concert at Wayne State has environmental theme

WHAT:
Sounds of the Earth concert, an intriguing blend of music, video, sound effects, prose and poetry, featuring the Wayne State University Wind Symphony under the direction of professor Douglas Bianchi. The concert, one of many Earth Week activities at Wayne State, will draw attention to the power of nature, the fragility of ecology and sustainability of the planet. It is sponsored jointly by WSU's Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society program and the Department of Music in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. The public is invited and admission is free. (See below for reservation information.)

Thursday, April 23, 6:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Community Arts Auditorium, 450 Reuther Mall, on the Wayne State University campus.

WHO:
The musical compositions and readings are a moving, thought-provoking collage of modern sounds by living American composers, including WSU composer and Distinguished Professor of Music James Hartway. The concert will include the premier performance of Hartway's ". . . of birds, bears and butterflies." Music faculty members Laura Roelofs (viola) and Keith Claeys (percussion) will be featured artists in the composition, as will special guest harpist Kerstin Allvin. William Harris, professor of English, will render the narrative and poetry.
