Gary Brown, the former Detroit deputy police chief whose firing was at the center of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's text-messaging scandal, will be the keynote speaker at the Department of Criminal Justice's Distinguished Alumni Presentation series at noon, Feb. 18, at Wayne State University. The free lecture will be in the Law School's Spencer Partrich Auditorium at 471 W. Ferry Mall. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Criminal Justice Student Club.
Brown, an alumnus of the university's criminal justice department, will speak about Integrity and the Criminal Justice System. A decorated officer and former head of the Detroit Police Department's internal affairs unit, Brown has received numerous awards including the 2008 Collegian Award from the WSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This award, one of the most prestigious given by the college, recognizes outstanding alumni for their individual achievements, contributions to their industries or professions, and service to their community.
