All My Sons is set in the mid-1940s, in the Keller family's typical, American backyard. The action unfolds in this once utopian, social gathering place. During the war, Joe Keller's machine shop knowingly shipped out defective airplane parts, resulting in the death of several pilots. With recent events forcing Joe to deal with his past, he must come to terms with the decisions he made and take responsibility for the effects they continue to have on him, his family, and his nation.
Currently, All My Sons has been receiving national attention, as it is being revived on the Broadway stage. Arthur Miller's touching drama delves into the heart and soul of the American family. It's a story that resonates throughout post-World War II history. What makes the Hilberry's production unique is that it is being used to reach out to local veterans in a partnership with the Yankee Air Museum and Pride and Honor Flight. Both companies are non-profit organizations dedicated to serving veterans of World War II.
The collaboration began with a cast field trip to the Yankee Air Museum. The actors had the opportunity to speak with local veterans about their experiences in the war while researching the era. According to the history page on The Yankee Air Museum website, the museum was created, "in 1981, by a group of enthusiastic people" who wanted to "preserve the facts and glamour of southeastern Michigan's aviation history." The Yankee Air Museum has graciously donated, to the Hilberry, two tickets to fly in an authentic World War II B-25 Bomber. A silent auction will be held during the run of All My Sons, and proceeds will be donated back to the museum. For more information about the Yankee Air Museum visit www.yankeeairmuseum.org.
Pride and Honor Flight was established by Jack and Faye Wiseley. The organization provides local World War II veterans a free, all-inclusive trip to the National World War II Memorial. Last year 222 veterans made the trip and this year's goal is 255. For more information about Pride and Honor Flight visit http://www.rc.net/org/prideandhonorflight/index.html.
The Hilberry Theatre Company thanks the brave servicemen and servicewomen who, throughout the decades, have fought for our rights and freedoms both in battle and on the homefront.
