DETROIT-The Department of Nutrition and Food Science invites the public to the 2008 Marqueta C. Huyck Lecture on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Bernath Auditorium in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library.
The lecture, "Unlocking the Mystery of Extending Life Span: Is Diet the Key?" will feature three distinguished speakers:
• Steven Austad, Ph.D., professor of Cellular and Structural Biology, Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Austad will present, "Can we Starve Ourselves to Better Health and Longer Life? A Zoologist's Perspective on Calorie Restriction."
• James F. Nelson, Ph.D., professor of Physiology, Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Nelson will present, "Using Genetics to Probe the Anti-Aging Actions of Dietary Restriction in Mice."
• Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D., director of the Institute of Gerontology and professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Wayne State University. Dr. Lichtenberg will present, "Late Life Depression, Executive Functioning and Nutritional Risk in African American Elders.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Three credits of continuing education credit are available from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
