The Service to Journalism Award will be presented to Detroit Free Press Deputy Editorial Page Editor Stephen Henderson. Henderson's wide range of insightful columns on the mayor's text message scandal made him a frequent panelist, appearing on local media, as the community grappled with the intricacies surrounding the issue.
Mildred Gaddis, host of WCHB AM 1200's Inside Detroit, will receive the Community Service Award for her advocacy on behalf of the citizens of metro Detroit. A recent Crain's Detroit Business feature article notes "Gaddis' often-heated, no-nonsense interviews have garnered listeners ranging from Detroit retirees to top area politicians and executives, with her strong challenges to the power structure, especially the Kilpatrick administration."
Previous winners have included the staff of WWJ NewsRadio 950 (CBS), and Detroit Free Press reporters M.L. Elrick and Jim Schaefer.
The awards will be presented at the Oct. 15th Journalism Day Luncheon, to be held at noon, at WSU's St. Andrew's Hall, on the Lodge Service Drive just north of Warren Avenue. Tickets are $25. Please contact Reni Gresham at (313) 577-2627, or Reni.Gresham@wayne.edu for reservations.
