Columbia University Professor and Researcher Dr. Nancy King Reame Named 2008 Wayne State College of Nursing Alumna of the Year

DETROIT, July 2008 - Nancy King Reame, MSN, PhD, FAAN, the Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Nursing and director of the Doctor of Nursing Science program at the Columbia University School of Nursing in New York City, has been named the 2008 Wayne State University College of Nursing Alumni Association Alumna of the Year.

Dr. Reame, who earned her master's degree at the College of Nursing, will be honored as part of the eighth annual LifeLine Awards ceremonies on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Roostertail in Detroit.

A nationally respected authority in the field of women's health and reproductive research, Dr. Reame has been elected to the U.S. National Academies - Institute of Medicine, one of the highest individual honors in the health care profession. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Nursing, her current program of research focuses on the neuroendocrinology of the menstrual cycle, PMS and menopause, with the aim of clarifying the factors associated with each.

Dr. Reame serves on the advisory committee to the National Institutes of Health Women's Health Initiative, is an advisor to the Boston Women's Health Book Collective and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the North American Menopause Society. In 2005, she received the Golden Lamp Award from the Center for Nursing Advocacy for the "Best Media Depiction of Nursing." She is certified as a menopause clinician.

"I had the extreme good fortune of studying at Wayne State with such nationally recognized nursing leaders as Mabel Wandelt, the first person to tell me I should consider going on for my PhD, Virginia Cleland and especially Gretta Styles, who hired me for my first faculty position in nursing," Dr. Reame reflects. "I owe much to the institution."

The Alumna of the Year presentation will be made during the LifeLine Awards gala, which begins at the Roostertail with a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be chimed at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $175 per person.
