Wayne State partners with Macomb Community College in offering early admission program

WayneDirect eases transition from community college to university

A new partnership agreement between Wayne State University and Macomb Community College will enable MCC students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Wayne State to be admitted to WSU at the same time they are admitted or enrolled at MCC.

Called WayneDirect, the new program streamlines the transition from the community college to the university and is a response to the call for closer cooperation between state-funded universities and community colleges throughout Michigan. The agreement was signed Sept. 21 by Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid and Macomb Community College President Albert L. Lorenzo. It is effective beginning with the winter 2008 term in January.

In addition to admittance to Wayne State, the program gives participating MCC students access to many WSU services that increase the likelihood of a successful transition, while extending special privileges. These include access to WSU libraries; opportunities to meet with advisors and faculty at special “bridge” sessions; availability of WSU’s OneCard, a multi-purpose identification and prepaid debit convenience card; eligibility of qualified students to participate in the WSU Honors Program; and discounts on admission to WSU sporting events, plays, lectures and other activities.

The opportunity for concurrent enrollment at MCC and WSU is a strong feature of the program. Students who are eligible for financial aid will receive funding through the financial aid office at Wayne State. Application forms are available at both schools.

“In essence, WayneDirect is a pathway and a passport to Wayne State,” explained Nancy Barrett, WSU provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “One of the university’s priority missions is to equip Michigan’s future workforce with at least a four-year degree, an increasingly important requirement in today’s competitive marketplace. This partnership enables us to work closely with Macomb Community College and participating students to facilitate a smooth transition to Wayne State University for completion of undergraduate degree requirements.”

WayneDirect also is available through Wayne County Community College and Henry Ford Community College. WSU hopes to offer similar WayneDirect opportunities to students at other Michigan community colleges from which a substantial number of students transfer to Wayne State.

Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 11 schools and colleges to nearly 33,000 students.
