Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and WJBK Traffic Reporter Jackie Paige join the fourth annual Drive Safely to Wayne State Campaign, in cooperation with the Michigan Office of Highway Planning and AAA of Michigan.

While traffic fatalities in Michigan declined again in 2006 for the fourth straight year from 1,129 in 2005 to 1,084, alcohol and drug-related traffic deaths rose from 408 to 440, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These preventable deaths account for more than 40 percent of all Michigan traffic fatalities.

We can make a difference by spreading this sober message: Buckle up. Drive sober. Eliminate distractions.

Wayne State has led the way among educational institutions in Michigan to engage the public in driving safety. Its event is organized by the WSU Transportation Research Group (TRG), which provides critical analysis and evaluation of the nation and Michigan’s highway and safety programs.
