Wayne State Issues Official Statement Regarding New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's Subpoena of University Financial Services

August 3, 2007 -- A news release issued Wednesday by the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo includes Wayne State University among 39 universities nationwide to which Cuomo has said it will be serving subpoenas as part of an investigation into University Financial Services, a company specializing in consolidation of federal student loans.

In response to media inquiries generated by Cuomo’s announcement, Wayne State University is issuing the following statement:

Wayne State University has received a request for information from New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. We can confirm that the Wayne State University Athletics Department had a non-exclusive corporate sponsorship agreement with University Financial Services. While we have no reason at this time to believe any unethical or unlawful behavior was connected with this agreement, we will treat this matter seriously, as Wayne State holds paramount the integrity of its financial aid process and the welfare of our students.
