Med school a boost

In an editorial, the Oakland University and William Beaumont Hospitals announced plans to create a new private medical school is called "good news" for the region. The editorial cites three major benefits that will be realized by the proposed partnership: Medical schools have documented economic benefits for the regions in which they operate; the school is to be privately funded, thus not requiring state funding; and new medical school graduates will help address the projected physician shortage that's predicted nationwide. It is noted in the editorial that Detroit has two major medical schools - the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Wayne State University, "the largest single-campus medical school in the country."
