Wayne State University to kick off Earth Day spirit early: WSU EarthWeek April 2 through 6

Earth Day 2007 is Sunday, April 22. But Wayne State University will celebrate the first week of April with a weeklong schedule of activities in tribute to this international event.

The work of the university task force, created by Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid, will be presented during WSU’s EarthWeek. The charge of the task force was to develop a comprehensive strategy for instituting environmental practices throughout the university.

WSU EarthWeek will also feature the Mountaintop Removal Roadshow presentation by environmentalist Dave Cooper on the devastating effects of mountaintop removal coal mining operations in Appalachia.

An alternative energy panel discussion is scheduled featuring Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, representatives from NextEnergy and the Sierra Club, and Simon Ng, director of Wayne State’s Alternative Energy Technology program. Al Gore’s award-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” will also be shown.

April 2, Monday: Recycling
o Incinerator Panel: Detroit\'s Breath of Fresh Air (4 to 6 p.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library ) 
        
  • Participate in this popular interactive discussion with experts on the incinerator and its history with the city of Detroit. Listen to the discussion on how community efforts have impacted the administration to look into viable solutions to this issue.


April 3, Tuesday: Sustainability
o The Mountaintop Removal (1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
        
  • This presentation by expert, Dave Cooper, will have your top exploding. Learn about the devastating impact of this practice done to get at coal seams and find out what can be done to stop it.
o “An Inconvenient Truth” (4 to 6 p.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
        
  • Come see the Academy Award-winning documentary on climate change and global warming presented by former United States Vice-President and passionate environmentalist, Al Gore. After the show, contribute your ideas regarding how we can reduce Wayne State\'s carbon footprint. Admission is free and open to the public.

April 5, Thursday: Energy
o President\'s Task Force on Environmental Initiatives (9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
        
  •  Don\'t miss this presentation by President Reid’s Task Force on Environmental Initiatives. Hear recommendations from the subcommittees including Energy, Sustainability, Recycling, Mass Balance and Transportation.
o Alternative Energy Panel Discussion (4 to 6 p.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
        
  • This energetic exchange will feature Wayne County Executive, Robert Ficano, representatives from NextEnergy and the Sierra Club, and Wayne State Engineering

  • Department\'s Dr. Ng. Come join in as they debate alternative energy issues as they relate to our area.

April 6, Friday: Transportation
o “Who Killed the Electric Car?" (Noon to 2 p.m., The Welcome Center Auditorium, 42 W. Warren Ave.) This film chronicles the life and mysterious death of the GM EV1, examining its cultural and economic ripple effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business.
o "Mass Transit in Detroit?": A Panel Discussion on Transportation (4 to 6 p.m., Bernath Auditorium, David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
        
  • Join us as a group of six distinguished guests discuss the future of Detroit\'s transportation system. WSU\'s Victor Green will moderate a discussion with representatives from WSU, the community, and government representatives including Oakland County Commissioner Dave Woodward, and 26th District Representative Marie Donigan.
