Wayne State University’s Community Arts Gallery presents Michigan Water Color Society’s 60th Annual Exhibition
Wayne State University’s Community Arts Gallery will present the Michigan Water Color Society’s 60th Annual Exhibition from June 22 through July 20, 2007. This exhibition will feature approximately 50 works in water media, selected by internationally recognized artist Gladys Nilsson, who serves as juror for this special 60th annual show. The works have been selected for excellence in technical content and execution, and showcase a rich diversity of handling, a wide range of subject matter, and the gamut of traditional watercolor through experimental approaches that will both captivate and challenge viewers. Artists whose works have been included in the Water Color Society’s annual exhibitions in previous years include Stanley Rosenthal, Beth P. Spencer, Linda Baker, Darcy Scott, Lisa Tennant and Robert Fionda.
The Michigan Water Color Society was founded in 1946 by a group of watercolor artists within the Detroit Scarab Club with a mission of furthering a strong awareness, education and interest in water media through juried exhibitions and awards, and lectures, demonstrations, and presentations to encourage an exchange of ideas. Membership is open to past or current Michigan residents.
This year’s juror, Chicago artist Gladys Nilsson, received her art education at The Art Institute of Chicago where she is now adjunct associate professor of painting and drawing. In the 1960s, she was a founding member of the “Hairy Who”, a group of artists also known as the “Chicago Imaginists” and the “Monster Roster.”
Nilsson has exhibited in over 200 solo exhibitions and 400 group shows, including at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, New York), and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. Nilsson’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Museum of Modern Art (New York, New York) and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Ms. Nilsson will give a lecture at The Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium in Wayne State University’s Law School Building from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Friday, June 22, 2007, before the exhibition opening reception at the Community Arts Gallery from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Both the lecture and opening reception are free and open to the general public.
