Award-Winning Titles from Wayne State University Press!

Wayne State University Press is pleased to announce that two of our recent titles have been recognized with prestigious awards:

The Stains of Culture: An Ethno-Reading of Karaite Jewish Women by Ruth Tsoffar has been selected as a runner-up for the 2006 National Jewish Book Award, in the Women’s Studies category. The National Jewish Book Awards, now in its 56th year, is the longest-running program recognizing notable Jewish books in North America. In The Stains of Culture, Ruth Tsoffar considers how Egyptian Kariates of the San Francisco Bay Area define themselves as a minority group within Jewish culture through the Bible and its bearing on their bodies.

The Autobiography of William Sanders Scarborough: An American Journey from Slavery to Scholarship edited and with an Introduction by Michele Valerie Ronnick and its related traveling photography installation have received the 2006 Outreach Prize from the American Philological Association.

This prize recognizes work that reaches out beyond the field of Classics to the wider community, particularly to minority groups. The Autobiography of William Sanders Scarborough is a valuable historical record of the life and work of a former slave who became president of Wilberforce University and helped formalize the intellectual tradition of the black scholar.
