DETROIT, MI (January 8, 2007) – The Wayne State University Department of Music opens their winter 2007 concert series on Monday, January 15 with the Annual African American Composer’s Concert. The performance is scheduled for 3 p.m., and is presented by Delta Omicron Professional Music Fraternity; the concert is presented as a celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. Also in January is a Faculty Recital presenting soprano Frances Brockington, on Sunday January 21, at 3 p.m., and admission is free for both events.
February will showcase the music of American Composer Samuel Adler, at a Festival of American Music on February 17 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The concert will feature the WSU Concert Chorale, WSU Symphonic Chorus as well as Vanguard Voices of Dearborn, The Archdiocesan Chorus of Detroit, and the brass and percussion of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra. February 26 is the Annual Concerto Concert, featuring this year’s competition winners and the WSU Orchestra with Kypros Markou directing. Admission is $5 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults. On the 28th of February, WSU Wind Symphony will be performing at the Community Arts Auditorium, located at 5451 Cass Ave. at 7:30 p.m., and admission is $5 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults.
In March, the WSU Concertante Chamber Orchestra will perform on Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m., under the direction of Kypros Markou, and on Sunday March 25 at 3 p.m., faculty members Maurice Draughn and Particia Terry-Ross will perform harp duos. Both events are free. The music department is proud to present the WSU Big Band and Chris Collins performing the music of Duke Ellington, with guest performers George Benson, sax, Johnny Trudell, trumpet, and Barbara Ware on vocals. This performance is on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $5 for students and seniors and $8 for adults.
April 12 and 13 features the Oper Workshop under the direction of Frances Brockington. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $5 for students and seniors and $8 for adults. April also brings guest artists Chantal Cazaux, soprano, and Élise Meunier-Rudin, piano, on the 13th at 11:45 a.m.; admission is free. On April 15 a concert in honor of The Dumensil Trust will feature WSU chamber ensembles at 3 p.m.
All concerts are held in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, located on campus at 480 W. Hancock, Detroit, unless otherwise noted.
