Wayne State University offers financial boost to qualified high school prospects who participate in Scholars Day

Some 1,000 qualified high school seniors who are facing the difficult task of choosing which higher education institution to attend next fall will receive a powerful incentive from Wayne State University in the form of a $6,000 scholarship ($1,500 a year for four years).

Based on their high school academic performance, qualified seniors are invited each year to one of four Scholars Days early in the year on the Wayne State campus. The dates for 2007 are Jan. 27 and Feb. 1, 10 and 11. Each student who attends is guaranteed a $1,500 annual scholarship along with an opportunity for increased offers, up to and including a four-year, full-tuition Presidential Scholarship. Participating students also are considered for privately funded scholarships.

Increased scholarship offers are made on the basis of an interview with Wayne State representatives during a small-group session with other students during the event as well as a review of high school grade-point average, ACT scores and a written essay.

Scholars Day includes an introductory session with Honors Program Director Jerry Herron in addition to the interview, tours of campus, an open-house session with the university’s schools and colleges, and lunch.

To be considered for an invitation, students must be admitted to Wayne State by Jan. 15 of the current year and have achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.5 at the end of their junior year of high school. Additionally, they must submit their ACT scores to the university.

All students who participate in Scholars Day are invited to join Wayne State’s prestigious Honors Program, which offers special class sections and includes service learning and research components in the undergraduate curriculum. “The honors experience at Wayne State integrates academics, social interaction, emotional nurturing and intellectual stimulation to develop the next generation of leaders for our city, state and nation,” Herron explains.

The growing Honors program at Wayne State includes more than 1,500 students, many of whom decided to join the program after participating in Scholars Day. For more information on Scholars Day, visit www.scholarsday.wayne.edu
