Contributions to the university totaling $83,099,764, were raised from private support including monies generated during its current capital campaign referred to as “Wayne First, The Campaign for Wayne State University.”
The Chronicle rankings are based on cash donations raised by charities, in addition to gifts of art, stock, real estate, medicine, food and other noncash items, according to the publication.
The identified charities were ranked based on the total amount that they raised in the fiscal year ending in 2005, or in 2006 for organizations with fiscal years ending in January, February or March.
The Chronicle used data that colleges and universities submitted to the Council for Aid to Education, a nonprofit organization in New York that monitors charitable giving to educational institutions.
