Wayne State University has joined the effort to replace winter clothing lost in the Dec. 1 fire that destroyed the Society of St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Flat Rock. The shop served primarily the poor and working poor through referrals for clothing, furniture, and household items.
The Wayne State community is pitching in to donate goods at 15 collection sites on campus through Wednesday, Dec. 13. Donors have been encouraged to drop off blankets, winter clothes, boots and shoes that are clean and in good condition. The effort is being coordinated by the university’s Business and Auxiliary Operations Division. The sites are as follows:
• Academic/Administrative Building, Cass and Palmer (Suite 1642)

“We know that many underprivileged families have an urgent need for warm clothing at the start of the winter season,” said Francine Wunder, director of corporate/public affairs for the university. “The loss of all contents due to the fire at an important distribution center in the downriver area could really hurt many needy families. We know that Wayne State students, faculty and staff will welcome a convenient way to help alleviate the hardship. What better way to get into the spirit of the season.”
